Campaigning and lobbying
The NCT campaigns to protect the rights and choices of all parents across the UK.
Along with members of our campaigners network, NCT Active, we campaign on a range of issues relating to pregnancy and birth, babyfeeding and the transition to parenthood.
We work to achieve positive change for parents and their young families by influencing local and national governments and by working in partnership with other organisations.
Campaign to End Child Poverty
The NCT is a member of the campaign to End Child Poverty
3.8 million children - one in three - are currently living in poverty in the UK, one of the highest rates in the industrialised world. This is a shocking figure given the wealth of our nation. The NCT believes that the social and emotional impact of poverty on new parents undermines the foundations of family life and childhood.
Find out what you can do to get the government to keep its promise to Britain's children and eradicate child poverty by 2020.
Pregnancy and birth
The NCT wants all parents to have a positive birth experience because birth marks the beginning of the parent - child relationship. A positive birth experience can make parents feel more confident about the transition to parenthood. Read more.
What we campaign for:
- One-to-one support in labour
- Birth environments that are designed around women’s needs
- Choice of place of birth for every woman
- Protection and promotion of the normality of birth
- Well informed parents able to make key decisions
- Access to individualised services for all
Our campaigning work is informed by our Birth policy and the normal birth consensus statement developed by the Maternity Care Working Party.
Baby feeding
The NCT campaigns for all parents to feel supported in their decision regarding how they feed their baby.
We know that breastfeeding provides babies with the healthiest possible start in life in terms of growth and development.
We campaign for a culture that is supportive of breastfeeding and allows parents who decide to use formula milks to access clear, non-commercial information about how to store and prepare these milks.

We campaign to:
- Promote and support breastfeeding
- Protect parents and babies from the misleading effects of formula advertising
Transition to parenthood
Becoming a parent is a life changing experience. NCT wants every parent to feel prepared, supported and confident in making this transition. What happens in the early days can have a major impact at the time and also have long-term consequences for the child, the parents and for society.
Our campaigning work is informed by our parenthood policy.
