Early Days (postnatal) courses

These courses are for those with new babies to help parents make the adjustment to being parents and learn more about caring for themselves and their new baby. They are run by qualified postnatal leaders.

The most valuable lesson I learnt from our postnatal course is that there isn’t a correct way to parent a baby – it is what suits the individual and fits in with their life. This gave me the confidence to stand up and say, you know what, this is how I do it and it works for me. And if it works for you and your family, stick with it!

They are usually attended by women and offer a space in which to explore the adjustment to becoming a parent and all that it means. As a group you will discuss practical skills in coping with a new baby but much more important the course will help you find your feet as a mother and help give you the confidence to parent your baby in the way that you feel is right for you and your family.

Most courses offer 12 hours of time with a postnatal leader in a group of 6 to 12 women. They are usually held during the day and can be attended from when your baby is 2 weeks to 6 months old.

In some areas postnatal leaders hold drop-ins which are in a slightly different format.

Our courses all vary slightly because each course is designed around the group of people who are on the course to meet their needs. Most courses run as a set of sessions with the same group attending each session.

Parents will get to know others in a similar position and attendees often find the people they meet on these courses become an important support in the months and sometimes years after their babies are born.
